Oyster Plates
Porcelain and Earthenware for Your Table
An oyster plate is designed to serve oysters on the half-shell. Individual wells cradle each oyster in place, keeping shells steady and juices contained — no ice required. Originally crafted from porcelain using plaster molds, these plates became popular during the Victorian era when oyster culture swept America and Europe.
Today, a beautifully glazed oyster plate is equal parts functional serveware and collectible art. At Thomas Lee Living, we source our oyster plate collection from artisan makers we trust — and try every plate at our own table before it hits the shop.
Each oyster plate in this collection has been hand-selected for vintage charm and timeless color. These are the items we reach for when friends arrive for a garden supper or a Friday shuck on the porch.
Why Every Oyster Plate Is a Piece of Art
Our French Quarter oyster plates are hand painted in Portugal by Abigails artisans using traditional earthenware methods. The Northern Neck line comes from Coton Colors, a studio known for hand-sculpted ceramic serveware. Because each piece is handmade, no two oyster plates are alike — variations in glaze, color, and form make every plate unique.
Most oyster plates hold six oysters per plate, though larger platters cradle up to twelve with a center well for lemon. The wells also double as a tasting plate for tapas or appetizers beyond oysters.
So why are oyster plates so expensive? They are shaped from plaster molds, glazed by hand, and fired in the oven at high temperatures — the same process used in the 19th century. That craft gives each piece its rich color and durability.
A Color for Every Table and Garden
Our collection features oyster plates in navy, cobalt, turquoise, lavender, salmon, yellow, pink and cream, and white — each color designed to match your dinnerware or stand alone as wall art draped along a shelf.
Many of our porcelain oyster plates are oven safe, microwave safe, dishwasher safe, and freezer safe — serve hot Oysters Rockefeller from the grill or chill seafood appetizers with ease.
